Visiting with your dog

Welcome

A visit to one of our woodlands or reserves is a great day out for you and your dog.

You can enjoy a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life while your dog will relish the change of scenery and the sights, sounds and scents of the natural world.

Dogs are welcome at our woodlands and reserves but there are restrictions on where they can go at some places.

Read on for our tips for a safe and happy visit.

Plan your visit

This website features our main woodlands and reserves with facilities for visitors.

Every woodland and reserve webpage has information on:

  • any restrictions on where dogs can go
  • trail lengths and grades
  • visitor facilities
  • directions and parking information

Before you set off check the webpage for the place you want to visit.

Then grab your dog’s lead and get set for the simple pleasures of a walk with your canine companion in the great outdoors.

During your visit

Dogs are welcome at our woodlands and reserves but there are restrictions on where they can go at some places.

  • Read local signs - they'll tell you if there are any restrictions on where dogs can go or if a path has been diverted.
  • Be respectful to other visitors - keep your dog in sight, under control and on a lead where signposted.
  • Remember that dogs can scare or injure wildlife - keep your dog on a lead to protect ground-nesting birds and livestock.
  • Clean up after your dog - bag it and bin it or take it home. You can use any public waste bin or your bin at home.

Dog walking code

The Dog Walking Code has been developed with input from many countryside agencies.

It contains advice to help you enjoy safe and happy walks with your dog in the great outdoors and avoid causing problems for others.

Read the Dog Walking Code or watch the film.
