All large raised reservoirs with a capacity of 10,000 cubic metres or more must be registered with us.

The main principles of the Reservoirs Act 1975 is to ensure large raised reservoirs are built, altered, brought into use, supervised, maintained, abandoned and discontinued under the guidance of qualified civil engineers.

If you own or operate a large, raised reservoir it may be designated as a high-risk reservoir. This guidance explains how we decide the designation, how you can be involved in making the right decision and how you can review or appeal a designation.
